“Rollover” Credits
From time to time an au pair will exceed the number of hours or credits they need to fulfill the educational component during their first program term. We have recently received a clarification from the U.S. Department of State confirming that these excess credits can be applied towards the educational component required during the extension term provided they adhere to the following regulatory parameters:
The coursework is completed at/through a U.S. post-secondary accredited institution.
Official transcripts are obtained to document the academic. credits/hours successfully completed
The academic credits/hours are accrued during an exchange program (the initial year and allowable extension of 6, 9, or 12 months).
Academic credit completed during the au pair’s initial term or extension term cannot be carried over to repeat program participation.
The coursework should be related to or in support of the au pair’s field of study or career trajectory.
One question you may have is regarding the last point because this is something that would be difficult to prove so it is simply something that au pairs to keep in mind as they register for classes.
This clarification is good news and allows for some flexibility so no unused credits will go to waste!
